Matter of Heart

Not a month has passed and another tragedy has occurred. I am overwhelmed by the noise of the world’s solutions. It’s such a loud noise; based around all the wrong things. Never the heart of the matter, just issues and agendas. You see Sutherland Springs is why Jesus came, why he understands, and why we need him more today.

He came to bring comfort to those who mourn and remind us that this world is not our home but a way station where we work out our salvation with fear and trembling and move in to a place of grace, and peace. We want understanding of the evil, but that only God knows, and is broken with the heartache of those who weep. He came to give us a promise and a hope for a future free from this present evil, and a promise and hope to overcome the world.

John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

He understands and knows that though the evil is dark, that he is enough for now, and the light does triumph over darkness. No one knows more the pain of suffering and loss through an act of injustice than He does. If fact, his suffering, was not for the sake of understanding, it was for our sake, the salvation of all mankind.

We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize . . . but one who in every respect has been tested as we are. (Hebrews 4:15)

We need him more today. The heart of the matter is a matter of the heart. This may be the point of understanding we need… Would any of these tragedies, the multiple church shootings, the terror attack on New York bike lane, 9/11, Oklahoma City, Cain’s murder, have a different outcome if an encounter with Jesus is in the life of these individuals? You may stop someone from buying a gun, but a foul heart will use a knife, a car, a rock. How do we change hearts? Only God can heal hatred and rage. Jesus more than ever is the solution.

I’d like to close with this thought from John Piper. “The God who draws near to Sutherland Springs is the suffering, sympathetic God-man, Jesus Christ. No one else can feel what he has felt. No one else can love like he can love. No one else can heal like he can heal. No one else can save like he can save”

Peace be near you,
